I'm wearing a sweatshirt that I got about 15 years ago in high school. All of my sneakers, most of which I still wear, are from high school. I have some short skirts (that I now think are too short) that I got about ten years ago. They're going in the rummage sale. Im sure I have more, I just can't think of any. Well, I have a collection of oversized Ts (XL and XXL) from high school. While they were big then, they're even bigger now. I figure that a few of my favorites will be worn this summer when I get a noticeable baby bulge.
What I do is buy classic style clothes for as cheap as possible and keep them for as long as possible.
I do have some baby clothes, like the dress I wore home from the hospital, the dress in which I was baptized, etc. I've asked my mom for those for my daughter so she can wear them at the same times. (Had we a son, he would have gotten my husband's baptism outfit for his baptism.) I don't know about Christmas and Easter dresses, but I'm guessing that mys sister saved the dresses her daughter wore for her first Christmas and Easter and I'll borrow them. (Knowing my sister, as we were raised well, she probably got them for nothing or next to nothing and second hand.) Recycling and keeping traditions alive... Both are done in my family.
I digress.

What a funny question , i kind of see where your going. It is only because your young that it seems you are seeing the elderly wearing the same stuff. For instance when i was young there used to be a Cole's with all these floral patterned dresses for older generation people over 50 and so on. Well imagine my shock when the Queen started wearing this type of attire for special outings... I felt like choking. Then , worst still.... somebody decided to bring this out on young people ! Now , the outfits seem to be a lot nicer and more unusual and pretty floral tiny patterns. As for the elderly, i think ... Fashion is really when your 14 to say 30 's that is what fashion dictates and everyone else copies a similar style or design from whatever is going on in that era. Like if sundresses are in , then you see little 6 year olds wearing a copy of the older girls design, and the elderly having a similar copy in their aprons for instance or coats ! For your question to matter , you need to individually pick the age of the people your talking about and see what were the fashion in their age range of the approximate age i mentioned above. That will show you what they are wearing now is different from what they were wearing then.

I actually have a box with some of my baby clothes in them. I think they were my first Christmas dress and my first Easter dress. So they are almost 23 years old. Um, can't really wear them.

I have a red and blue striped cotton sailor's turtleneck that is 33 years old. My sister gave it to me when I was 12. I still wear it and it's still in decent shape.

I had this shirt that my parents got me in Disney because I was cold. I still wore it as PJ's 8 years later. Unfortunately, it has tiny holes and is too small. lol
