Well, are you a musician or a street performer...what do you do? That would help with the sign and the money collection idea.
ok., this could work for whatever...
You can try what Ben Stiller did on American Idol. Put on sign "If I make ____
I will stop ____" fill in the blanks with amount you think you would like to earn for the days work and whatever it is you do.

My son is a guitarist
He just opens up his guitar case and puts it on the ground sometimes and people throw change in it
no sign required
Its very popular in metro Pittsburgh
