The Guy who conned Locke for his kidney also conned Sawyer's mom. He told the Sawyer that we know, that his one of his alias was Tom Saywer. That's how he knew, so Sawyer asked some questions and that guy admitted everything.

Because he know Tom Sawyer conned his mom which had his father kill his mother then kill himself. He was old enough at the time to know who conned them.

sawyer's(James) dad killed his wife then himself
cooper's con-ing of sawyers mom is what caused him to kill his wife
James knew the mans name and that he was a con-man
