I have to renew the clear coat on a few panels on my car, and I wondered if the are all just naturally clear, and not tinted.
Also whats the best make.

Depends, how good do you want it to look? If you're going to the trouble of doing several panels, why not just do the whole car? Youll have to mask up most of the car anyway.

Don't forget to flat the car out before doing the clear coat.

I'd strap Estes size D multi-stage model rocket engines in a tube mounted to the car... *Damn, didn't think anyone would beat me to that answer! **In truth, only two things will help--aerodynamic profile and reduced friction between the car and the track. Despite what's stated below, additional weight won't make the car go faster (ask Galileo, the original Pinewood Derby racer). So, find the most aerodynamic design that's reasonable to create and polish, polish, polish the wheels (use polished glass wheels, if possible). Friction will likely be a more significant factor than aerodynamics in this instance, because of the small profile of the car's leading edge and the limited speeds involved. And then there's always the rocket engines...

Ask a body shop for an accurate answer. Clear is applied soon after the paint is applied. You can not just spray clear over old paint, it will look like crap. Call a good body shop, they will be a big help.

In very, very simple terms cars are painted with emulsion paint. They are then painted over with a clear lacquer.

The actual technology is very refined and expensive.

I would suggest talking to your local body repair shop. They would be able to explain it in detail.
