I always store mine rim up. They can get dusty so I find it best to keep them in regular use to avoid this occurance!

Glass is a crystalline structure by nature, however, that ringing is just the reverberation of sound caused by the micro vibrations when you run your finger around the rim. If you flick the glass slightly with your fingernail it will do the same thing.
