It is a Wireless Router that can be used with either DSL or Cable internet.

It is NOT a DSL Modem. If I understand you correctly, what they are saying is that it isn't a dsl modem/router. There are products that are Modems that have the functionality of a router as well, eliminating the need for a separate router.

A DSL modem does this:
Phone line connects to the modem, the modem then connects to a router or computer (some have an ethernet port or a usb port).

A router:
WAN (from a modem) and then 1 or more LAN ports (for your computers).

A DSL Modem/Router:
Has a phone connector (from your wall), and an ethernet (or USB) that can go directly to your computer, switch or hub and it also does routing functions (NAT - Network Address Translation - for example).

Well it is a router period. If could care less if you connect to DSL, Cable, or even wireless bridge. If you meant to buy a router with a DSL MODEM built into it then you didn't get the correct router.

If you have a normal DSL modem that connects to your computer (with eithernet) just move that line to the WAN / Internet port on your new router. If you do not have a DSL MODEM you need one.

This actually is a pure router with no dsl (phone) port. It is designed to be added to a LAN ported modem. You are better to exchange it for a router with dsl, there is a big difference.

Connection diagram to connect the cable / dsl modem to the router.

The product manual (page 5) clearly shows the port on the back, far right (next to the power adapter) is for the connection for the Ethernet cable to the Cable or DSL

The DI-624 AirPlus XtremeG is a high-speed 2.4GHz wireless broadband Router with a built-in 4-port Fast Ethernet Switch.
The simple answer is that you ae right and your ISP isn't. If he (she) still argues, point them to this page:

try a hard reset. use a paperclip or pencil tip and press the reset button for at least ten seconds, that will reset your router to factory settings, from there you get a fresh start.
