The sources vary in their estimation because it depends how accurately you want to measure it... if you went over each mountain measuring the surface area of very boulder, cave and valley you would end up with a higher figure than if you just averaged all the minor variations out. Taken to the extreme, every grain of sand on the earth's surface has its own surface area... if you included those the result would be massive.
