Having recently arrived back from Alanya in Turkey both myself and my partner found it to be just about the most un-pleaent place we have ever been, and we have been to many countries.
The men were for the most part a real pain, always leering and making snide sexual comments, so much so that toward the end of the so called holiday it was a better option to stay within the confines of the hotel, ensuring we avoided the waiters, who were not much better.
Shop owners were actually spitting at people for not buying the cheap tat they were trying to force upon them ,this resulted in a badly broken jaw for one who made the mistake of doing it to someones wife !
The beach was filthy and you could not walk more than about ten feet before being approached by someone either begging or aggresivley trying to intimidate you into giving them money for one thing or another.
I would rather stick pins in both my eyes than go back to Turkey, what a dump !!

its not always like that. i have been to some beautiful places in Turkey and not had that trouble. perhaps you should have tried going further afield and seeing the real Turkey.

my son said Egypt is a nightmare, especially if you go to the pyramids. he said the hawkers there will literally hang on to you.

I haven^t been to Alanya and I have to say that the employees of shop owners at the market in Antalya and in Belek were, shall we say 'insistent', which was a bit off a pain. However, I don't consider the beaches to be dirty and I have never encountered beggars.
I'm a frequent visitor to Turkey and it is fantastic country. Admittedly I don't normally go to tourist areas. The people I have encountered are friendly and you get a very warm welcome.
I have been amazed, when in transit at Istanbul airport what tourists are wearing, or not wearing. It may be, according to the constitution, a secular state, but 80% of the population is Muslim. I've learnt to dress appropriately. It is, after all, their country.
So you've been to many countries, but which countries? Do you insist on being aggressively English in those countries? Do you want bacon for breakfast?
Part of the travelling experience is getting to know other cultures, not simply expecting the locals to accept and provide your norms.
The quality of goods on sale is good for the price you're paying. If you pay tat prices, then the chances are you'll get tat.
I love the country, the people and the scenery, but not necessarily the government.
I'd rather go anywhere in Turkey than the Costa Brava.
And by the way, I know at least six originally Armenian families, personally, in just one small town in eastern Turkey. That problem was in 1915 - it's 2007 now.

Go to Belek. It's very close to Antalya. The beaches there are very gorgeous and the hotels are wonderful! They also have many water-sports along the beach such as jet skiing and dolphin boats, etc. But I also think you'd enjoy ANY city that's near the coastline. They all provide the things that you've mentioned.

Oh wow, that must've been an awful experience. Sorry to learn about that. You definitely deserved more than crappy service and rude treatment in your holiday.
I've heard more pleasant things about clients of mine who vacationed in Turkey (I'm a travel agent) and I almost desire to go there myself someday. Maybe you picked the wrong side of the country to visit, where tourism is not so popular and locals do not know how to react to foreigners. At least I know now which part of the country to NOT recommend to my clients. Thanks.

Sounds terrible, thanks for the warning. Avoid Serbia because they will rip you off any chance they get and don't drive to Bulgaria because the car theft rate is 100 percent.

Hubby and I were thinking of taking the kids to Turkey for a week this year - may have to reconsider - thanks for the warning.
