my dear friend Clive,
i have been in this business from long,
there is no battery in a 2 stroke engine scooter bcoz it works with a running dynamo.that is the reason u need to kick for the dynamo to run n generate elctric spark(in India)
If the scooter starts with push button or Self start then its 4 stroke engine and obviously yes with battery.
If u wanna get a working diagram of this, check this out-

The battery forces an electrical current which triggers a spark that ignites the fuel used to power the engine.
