A woman is fertile only few days in a cycle: the egg can be fertilized within 24-36 hours from its release. On the other hand sperms can survive in her body up to 5 days.
Sum it up and you'll have that a woman is potentially fertile from 5 days before ovulation to 1-2 days afterward. Now the tricky thing is to find out when she ovulate.
If she's regular, it'll most likely take 12-16 days between ovulation and her next period.
To sum it up: the last 9-10 days of her cycle she's no longer fertile. At the beginning of a cycle she could be fertile if she has rather short cycles (22-24 days).

There are ways to track ovulation to figure out when it's most likely ok, but even then it is very risky. Always use a condom, then you can have sex whenever you want, any other method is going to fail eventually.
Five days after menstruation is not correct, and things are different for different women.

proper way to count is from the first day of your period..... not the last day. this is only effective if you have a regular cycle and of course considering your age, too.

peak of ovulation is on the 14th day (remember to count from the 1st day of your period). 3 days before and after the peak of ovulation will be your fertile period, where getting pregnant is almost certain.

to simplify: June 01 1st day of period
June 01-10 non-fertile period
June 11-17 fertile period
June 18- till menstruation - nonfertile priod

just reverse this if you do wanna get pregnant

you can get preggers any time you CAN get preggers, that means if you have already begun menstruating, you can get preggers. I got preggers using a condom... sucks but there you go, if it's God's will.... if you are not ready for a baby, i'd suggest birth control pills or the depo shot, vasectomy, or abstinence

if you have sex 2 days before you MOST LIKELY will not get pregnant. Thats a fact my human sexuality teacher stated it.
