Good question. Many times those products end up in the normal retail distribution channels.
It is not a matter of good products, lets assume that the vitamins are the same from the MLM verses those at GNC, it is just a diffent distribution method.
Maybe the same company makes both products.

I am involved with a juice MLM, and its more profitable for them to sell this way than in store, because people are shipped every month, no advertising expenses and I am sure they put themselves at the top of the chain.

I am also sure that the Acai Plus Juice costs $1.50, but its sold for $32, that way they can legally make a bunch of people money on it.

In so many ways, all MLM's are a scam I have never seen one that sold a product cheaper than what it would sell retail. but thats how everybody in the MLM makes money, if your ok with that like I am there is money to be made, just make sure you pick one you like and that its fairly new, otherwise you will never go far in it if everybody has already heard of it

With mlm you dodge the normal attention a product would get. And thus have less of a need to prove your claim.
I view a product with superior claims, but not a regluar availability as a fraud.

There are two way of marketing a product. This might be one of the strategy the company is following. When a product is good, it has demand, why are they not dumping it in the market? May be they think, that dumping of a product would create negative impact.
If my product has demand, I would flood it in the market and make money in short time. Part of the money I am getting will be used for product improvement, and creative advertisement to push the demand further.

- Product may be unproven, and it may be hard to get others onboard
- Someone owns the exclusive rights to selling it and wants to sell it direct.
- Bad marketing/management
- Does not have the production capacity to take it nationally through multiple outlets, or just wants to stay small and in control
