Personally, I need as many people to see that I am the ONE TRUE Answer to all of humanities problems. The sooner that these foolish mortals realise this the better off the whole planet will be.

Interestingly, I was just thinking about the same thing when I saw your question. I enjoy it. I'm communicating with someone hopefully constructively. When I ask questions I get mostly serious replies. There are always the jerks who write mean or hurtful things. But as far as accumulating points, it's just fun! The feeling I get when I get a "Best Answer" is kin to winning the lottery if you know what I mean. It gives me a good feeling. The people who are bothered are the ones who will write something stupid just to get 2 easy points. Otherwise, I'm not bothered about the points. I just like accumulating them. At least that gives you some insight into me at least!

I just want to get to level 2 so I can vote for the thumbs up/down thing... like when I read an answer someone has obviously put a lot of thought into.. I think it would be nice to acknowlege it (as the reader). Hence the need for more points to get to level 2.

Actually points don't matter to me. I do enjoy watching my percentage go up.
I was feeling useless, and now I feel like I can still help others even if I am limited by my health. People's comments have really helped me a lot. I feel like I am alive again.
I don't care if I make it to the top, I just like to get the great feeling that comes when you know you have made a difference in someone's life. And, the people who participate in Yahoo Answers have made a difference in my life.

I don't think people visit this sight merely for gaining points. Though any of their answer, when gets the reward he feels satisfied. As for me I try to answer to the question which I feel I faced in my life some time and on which I could get the answer and solve my predicament. I want to share it with someone who is facing the same problem. Since I do it sincerely keeping myself in his position and finds that he found some solace from my answer and rewarded me as a gratitude I feel jubilant.

Really I try to tell mysef it's not about points... but it is- well in my mind pts = apprectiation...
I mean who diesn't like being appreciated for their thoughts?? It's like putting your two cents in and getting two pts back lol
...and I really like answering people's questions - with so much unspoken thought and knowledge out there why not share? The points are there to encourage this sharing because like it's already been stated - people like being appreciated for their thoughts the points provide this...
and yes it's exciting when I'm picked as best answer- it's a bright spot in my day full of papers and exams!!

We all want to be winners, we are trained as small children that the higher our score in any activity means that we have done a good job and that we are worthy. This transfers into the liking of anything graded.

Thats human psychology. When ever people were given a chance of piling up something for free, they start doing it. Especially if intellectuals were given the chance of piling up points for what they share.... they start sharing their wisdom, which is an excellent quality of them. I dont think that answering in yahoo answers is not a bad habit. But EXTENSIVELY is def'ntly not a good habit. Hope u got my point.

I'm not really "bothered." Starting somewhat of an addiction to answering questions, but so what? Some of them like my answers, some of them don't. Thats fine. I don't like some of theirs, either. But everyone who answered before me has pretty much got it right: Boredom, feeling worth, being rewarded, helping out, etc. etc. Everyone's got their reasons.
