Since you've been tanning for a while I would tell you to tan either every day, or every other day. If you have extra cash now, it's a good time to buy better lotion. Anything from the brand Designer Skin is amazing! My absolute favorite is 'Spellbound'. Someone actually suggested it before me, and they described it a little bit. (The scent is tropical blossom, and it is wonderful) They have a bunch of different face lotions too. Try 'Vanishing Act', it's a facial bronzer and it has salicylic acid which helps with acne. 'Pure Intentions' is a body wash that I would suggest to use after tanning, and 'Angel' is a moisturizer that goes together with the body wash. They both have a kiwi-pear scent, and it's very fresh smelling. Whatever you do, DON'T buy any products at the tanning salon. You will pay way too much. The retail price of tanning lotions are double what you would pay for them online. Another suggestion I have for you, is to switch tanning beds. The salon I go to has 20, 15 and 10 minute beds. Sometimes the different intensity helps accelerate your tan.
You can't go wrong if you get the products I suggested, or any other Designer Skin products. I've never been tanner, than when I was doing everything I suggested to you.

hey becky,
its very important to consider which bed you are using. if you are using one of the lower levels it may be that. they are typically high in UVA(burning rays) rather then UVB (bronzing rays).
also consistency, do you go everyday? when building your base tan its important to go regularly.
and also what type of lotion are you using, accelerator, bronzer, or tingle? if you are fair skinned i would recommend an accelerator to get you started. it basically moisturizes your skin allowing it to soak up the rays. a bronzer will give you a little extra color along with everything the accelerator contains. i would also try upgrading/mixing up the beds, this helps you tan faster as well. and sometimes we just dont ever notice the difference so use a sticker to monitor your progress. GOOD LUCK
if all else fails ask the damn tanning associate, its her job. they train them in all these things

It takes a few weeks to get a base tanning, and buying a cheap lotion wont get you there. Instead of buying those pricey lotions at the tanning salon, buy them at amazon.com, they are almost half the price, I suggest "Spellbound" by Designer Skin, it a quadruple darkening serum and at the tanning salon it costs about $75 and at amazon.com it's only $35. Good luck, if you have anymore questions, feel free to email me!

I would upgrade to a high intensity bed. It will be a bit more pricey, but at least you will get results. Try calling some tanning salons and look for a bed called The Matrix. It has special bulbs in it that won't cause you to burn (something to do with the UVA and UVB rays the bulbs emit, I think it emits one but not the other).

I know you're young and you may not think much about the future of your body but please reconsider tanning. Not only does it cause cancer, it also causes premature aging. You really will regret it one day. Honestly, you get better "tanned" result from Xen Tan. (www.zentan.com) All of the beautiful tan people that you see in Hollywood and in magazines have tans, I know, but I swear to you that they didn't get it from the sun. They use Xen Tan and Mystic tan and other lotions. It looks darker and is much better for your skin. Email me and I'll send you one of my modeling photos sporting Xen Tan.

use a fake tan instead! it'll leave you with soft smooth healthy skin instead of wrinkles, pimples and cancer!
its quicker than a bed too, brown in 4hrs!
also you can apply more in certain areas such as cheekbones and shoulders so its more natural than a tanning bed & if you get it done at a good salon then can apply 'shadows' so you look thinner!
just remember to exfoliate, moisturise and use a tanning mitt to avoid getting too much on your hands.

you shouldn't be tanning in the first place, it causes cancer. Even if you tan at a salon, and not from the natural sun, it still causes cancer. most tanning salons still use machines that use harmful UV rays.
why not try that lotion that makes your skin gradually change over time? that is safe :)

I agree that you should try using the tingling stuff. Being super fair skinned, easily burnable, and untannable myself I use self tanners and will not go to the fake 'n' bake. But my mom though, who has a flawless 'bed tan' uses this tingling stuff that obviously works wonders
You could also try another tanning salon. Maybe the one you're going to has crappy bulbs.

use a lower SPF tan lotion. Read TAN LOTION, not sun block. It helps. Sun are the hottest from 11am to 3pm. Try care not to burn yrself.
