Intake is the air that feeds your car, oxygen is fuel to a fire and is just as important as gas. Cold air is more dense meaning theres more air molecules in the same area as hot air so the colder the air the more "fuel".

On some cars a hot air intake, will HELP gas milage sometimes. Fuel evaporates better, to burn more completely. Gasoline only (mostly) burns as a vapor, not a luquid.
Also since it has less air per square foot, you need to open the trottle more to get the same oxigen. That means there will be LESS vacuum that the engine has to pull against during the "intake stroke" of the engine.
The problem is that a greater throttle position may mean, a higher fuel to air ratio, because that is what is nessary for more power. It may offset the benifit of Hot air intake. It matters on the programming of the cars computer. so it's debatable. Some cars it works, other is doesn't.
On the other hand at Wide Open Throttle, cold air intakes allow more net oxegen, VS hot air, so that means the engine can add more fuel, and your engine will be more faster.

Depends on your car, but generally speaking, an intake is going to give you more air into the system, providing more oxygen to provide better combustion.
Usually, basic intakes, such as the $19.99 eBay intakes will give you more are that that pesky, restrictive stock intake, but on a downside are now pulling hot air from inside of your engine compartment.
On the other hand, a more expensive "cold air" intake will usually stretch down below the motor or into the bumper somewhere where it can pull colder air. Colder air is denser than warmer air and will thus expand more when it is heated up. This causes a greater "explosion" in your engine resulting in more power.
And everyone likes more power! :)

The intake is the air that is used to mix with the gas to power the engine. It will come in through an air filter and head to the intake manifold. When the intake valve opens, the air will be mixed with the fuel and will flow into the combustion chamber where it is compressed and ignited by a plug. This will cause the piston to be forced downward. At this point it will be considered exhaust after that.

colder air = more power. This is the main purpose of using a cold air intake. This will increase air intake because of the filter it uses and its placement which is behind the bumper (normally) plus the air it sucks will be colder since it doesn't suck the hot air in the engine bay.
