The "song" contains information that varies as a function of time.

The human brain is wired to "analyze" information in order to assess the degree of attention it should receive.

Therefore, It is difficult for the average person to completely "tune out" any given song.

This ability will further be influenced by the degree of complexity of the music. For example, elevator music would be easier to ignore than music that included vocals (voice with emotional intonation - even MORE information to be processed and evaluated).

Additionally, and for the same reasons given above, any given song (even repeated) will usually be preferable to random noise!

In comparison, the clock's "ticks" are VERY repetitive, and easily tuned out by the human brain as "background noise".

I think that the brain can quickly 'tune out' a simple, repetitive sound like a ticking clock. Similar to (if not exctly like) the way that we quickly become used to and ignore a smell.

Even though the song is repetitive, this repetition is only detected by the higher centers of the brain, which don't have the ability to 'tune out' stuff like that.

We expect a song to be a creative work. If that song contains excessive repetition, we are disappointed at the lack of creativity.

To someone with musical taste and sensitivity, excess repetition of even a good song is boring and annoying.

On the other hand, we expect the ticking of a clock to be repetitious. It is regular and consistent, so we can mentally tune it out.

I believe it is because a clock can sound a little like a heart beat and we have heard a heart beat ever since we were in our mothers stomach.
