I was talking to someone yesterday and he told me that he and his wife were going to name their first child Angel regardless of the sex of the unborn baby. It turned out to be a girl but don't you think a boy would be severely ridiculed if he were called Angel or am I being narrow-minded?!

I hope you've discussed with them the inappropriateness of their selection of children's names people who give their children stupid names for the sake of being different don't seem to care about the backlash on the child, they ought to be re-named themselves with an appropriately embarrassing moniker

Yes that is Narrow minded if known two males with that name. A lot of people have to grow into their names. I think Angel is lovely for a male or a female.

Surprisingly, it would seem that Angel is a boy name in Spanish.

However, I would tend to agree that most people would think of "Angel" as a girl's name (I would too), and any parent who names their boy Angel in an English-speaking country is asking for their child to get ridiculed.

Until the Buffy spin-off, Angel, I would've said that it would be asking for trouble to saddle a boy with such a name. Look at all the trouble a Boy Named Sue had, LOL. But the TV show has masculated the name and so they probably would have gotten away with it.

Angel is a common name in the Hispanic community. I would say you are just unfamiliar with it. Having grown up in Sacramento, CA., the most integrated city in the US, I never heard any of the guys named Angel get ridiculed.

It's not about being narrow-minded nor open-minded...This name is weird for a boy.
Imagine the boy would grow up being a raper (or someone with really manly job)...this name would probably be ridiculous.
Angela should be a great name for a girl though.

Ridiculed? Yes. Severely? It depends on the child and how he carry's himself. If he reacted erradically, then the taunting would've been more severe. If he stayed a cool customer, then Angel might not be so bad. It's not one I'd choose for myself or my son.

I would say the kid was lucky to be a girl. They aren't fans of the tv show are they. It is a nice name but I wouldn'tbe keen to name my son it.
My mum was called Angela but was nicknamed Angel, so I think it is a pretty name.
