If threads are on both sides use a good putty type or caulk sealant.

First of all you can't use a sealant for metal to pvc. In order to join a metal pipe to a pvc pipe which will carry water you need threads on both the metal pipe and the pvc pipe. You need to thread the two pieces together using teflon tape. This method is also true for copper pipes.

liquid teflon, try teflon tape then put some brand of pipe dope on top of the tape if the metal pipe is copper and has recently been repaired the pvc fitting may have ben warped due to the heat and will have to be replaced
