Every time I watch a show where there's a woman giving birth at home they say she needs hot water or there's always a bucket of water around.

It helps keep other people busy while they wait and also it will help with clean up later on... its not just hot water its towels too.

haha that's so funny you asked! When I was 18 my sister in-law decided to have a home birth for their second child and invited me to watch and participate. The midwife showed up and first thing she says to me is, "go boil me a pot of water." So I go and do it, thinking I'm doing something important...because like you I always saw them needing the hot water during births on TV....yeah, well, she made TEA!

To sterilize things including hands and to wash the woman and baby with sterile cloths. Also to clean up the mess. You don't want to clean a baby with a cold cloth!
