I don't "wait," but I am accepting of the opportunities which come my way, patient to allow them to come at the right times, and as willing to grab them as to let them pass me by (for better opportunities within sight). I don't "make anything happen," but I do take both action and responsibility for working to achieve my agendas. No one make make anything happen, except to think, the rest is simply working in hopes of effectively setting the right things in motion.

It is important to note that "waiting for things to happen" implies the expectation that the right things must come to you, but patience and acceptance opens you up to all of the opportunities which continually present themselves to every person. "Making things happen" implies that you can control and are responsible for all things (in consideration with this idea), neither of which are true. You can only control your mind, which can effect your body (in most cases), which can effect other things, .. therefore, you are only responsible for the workings of your own mind.

My answer: Look for the opportunities with preparation to take any of them, seize the right moments with with patience for the right opportunities; a combination of patient acceptance, and prepared action.

The rule of cause and effect, synonymous with Newton's Third law, applies here. You make things happen. And things will happen to you. Call it Karma if you will. If you were to do nothing you would be forced to bear the actions of other people affecting you. So I'd have to say that making things happen is like switching off auto-pilot and grabbing the controls.

Take the case of meeting someone new, for example. It could only be brought about by you doing something. Opening the door. Answering a wrong number. Calling someone back. Meeting up with other people. Moving yourself to a particular location. You're always doing something. It'd be difficult to say you were doing nothing unless you're comatose. And even the comatose have great effect. Watch "While you were sleeping".

Hmmm. I'm a control freak hell-bent on making things not happen. :D Also called anti-social at times.

Good question... however, you have given two extreme options...

Waiting for things to happen is an option for the people who are escapist, inactive and the ones who would depend on others to work for them and eventually aim to enjoy the fruits at the cost of other's efforts... borrowed success...!

The second option is for the wishful thinkers... humans should know their limits... it is risky to live with overconfidence and overestimating your capabilities... some times this attitude lands you in a situation where you cannot undo whatever wrong you might have committed… a point of no return…

We have to measure our capabilities and make efforts for achieving the best possible, rather than boasting for writing our own destiny…! A fighter has to get rid off his arrogance, anger, vengeance, hatred, and the ‘know all’, ‘big boss syndrome’ before hitting his first punch at the face of his opponent…

Self-praise, biases and prejudices would not help you in achieving success…

The Phrase make things happen is easily said than done. It requires a lot of determination and a burning desire to make things happen. Otherwise most of us generally wait for things to happen in our life.

You have to make things happen. To sit back and wait for things to happen is to play the victim.

Depends on the situation, sometimes I have to wait for events to move along before I can act on them. Other times I forge ahead and make things happen..lol

When I want change, I make things happen. When I want a replay, I wait for things to happen.
