it's actually called the lion sleeps tonight........Hank Medress, Jay Siegel, and Phil and Mitch Margo, who made up The Tokens, had a Top 15 hit "Tonight I Fell in Love" in 1960, but didn't have a record label in 1961. They auditioned for producers Hugo and Luigi (Peretti and Creatore) by singing "Wimoweh" to them. Hugh and Luigi were impressed by the performance but decided that the song needed new lyrics. With help from George Weiss, Hugo and Luigi rewrote the song, giving it the title "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The Tokens thought this had been nothing more than an elaborate audition - "Who is gonna buy a song about a lion sleeping" was their general sentiment. They were so embarrassed with the new title and lyrics that they fought the release of the recording (it was scheduled to be the B-side of another "import," a Portuguese song that they recorded in the same May 1961 session, "Tina").

The real history of Mbube can be read in a Rolling Stones artical (written by Rian Malan) . There is also a movie called Lion's Trail of the history of a Zulu band (the leader and writer being Solomon Linda) recording the song for a flat fee and no royalty rights. The heirs have been suing ever since. The song sang the way most people know is by the Tokens.

Do you mean The Lion Sleeps Tonight?, that was The Tokens in the 60's, or do you mean Bungle In The Jungle by Jethro Tull?

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" began as a 1939 African popular music hit "Mbube" that, in modified versions, also became a hit in the US and UK.
"Mbube" (Zulu for "lion") was first recorded by its writer, Solomon Linda, and his group, The Evening Birds, in 1939.
