the man that I'm interested in is also interested in me, we both have different lives, but share many of the same interests, he would like to move here. I'm not sure what I should do about this situation.. let me know what you think

defiantly don't offer to sponsor him. When you sponsor someone to immigrate you are responsible for them for a very long time even if you are no longer together. Lots of people have been scammed for lots of money this way
check into things before doing anything.

Be very, very careful. Such long distance relationships (for lack of a better term) rarely work out or are real.
Your "friend" may be looking for a way to get out of Russia and get you to pay for it. Once he gets to Canada (if he even is really interested moving there) you might not even see him before he disappears "into the crowd". Or he could get there, try to get money out of you and then never see you again.
Better to go with someone on this side of the world.

Go visit him in Russia, if nothing else you'll get a fun trip from it.
But also realize Russia is becoming worse and worse, he could just be looking for a way out.
