My boyfriend wants to buy me a rat for my birthday, something I've wanted for a long time. It's hard for me to get out and about, so I haven't been to a pet store in a while, and have no idea how much they cost. Anyone have a general idea of the usual cost?

Rats are NOT CHEAP PETS!! Yes, perhaps you can buy one for a few dollars, but then you need a cage -- a BIG cage. You need at least TWO rats because they will be lonely without a friend. You will need a lot of toys, a house, a wheel and a hammock. Food. Food dishes. A water bottle. Bedding. Cleaning supplies.

And that's only the beginning. Unfortunately for those of us who love them, rats are not the healthiest creatures. Your rat WILL be sick at some time -- he WILL need to see a vet. Vets are expensive. Very.

So unless you are prepared for all this (as you should be with ANY pet), please don't bring a rat into your life.

But if you ARE prepared -- well it will be the happiest birthday ever!!!!!

BTW, rats at a pet store can cost between $3 and $20. It's better to buy the MORE expensive rat because you know that pet store isn't selling them for food. You can also try to find a rat breeder -- they charge $20 - $30.

And PLEASE PLEASE get two rats -- two boys or two girls, NOT one of each! You will get TWICE as much love!

For an ordinary pet rat, they charge by size, from about $3 (US) to $6. If you want a specially bred show rat they can go as high as $40-50.
Remember to get two little ratties, since they get very very lonely when you can't be with them. And if you can spend a lot of time with them, you'll have twice the fun! They are so inexpensive to buy and maintain, two rats are easy to afford.

Have fun with your new little pets. Rats are the best!

I have 2 rats... At petland in ohio there is 3 different sizes.

Small-4.99
Medium-5.99
Large-6.99

*I'm glad to see more people who are rat owners. Because rats are so nice... They dont bite unless you put your finger through the cage, mistaken your finger as a treat.. And rats are more loving then other small rodents. They'll actually cuddle with you unlike a hamster who would just run away from you.. lol.. They also can do fun activities which you'll enjoy to watch and I love how they are so smart, did you know you can train them to do certain tricks??*
**Just to let you know which you already may.. DO NOT USE PINE OR CEDAR BEDDING. It'll cause upper respritory infection and would prolly kill your rat.** GOOD LUCK!!

It depends. They can cost from five dollars to twenty. Be careful when you by from pet stores as the usually have upper respiratory infections. Plus they are not always the friendliest. Do your research on rats before you get one. The develop behavioral problems and get really dirty if kept alone. Get two of the same sex though. Good luck, rats make great pets. I am a breeder, if you live in southern CA I have got some cute Dumbo Eared males for sale. You can email me.

Depends where you get it. I've seen rats for 5 & 10 dollars (pet stores) and the place where I'm getting my two females is 20 per rat (breeder)

Depends on the size, but Petco, PetSmart, ect usually only want a couple of dollars for one cause they're used as food for snakes, so they don't make them too expensive. Actual large rats may cost a little more, but less than $10.

Feeder rats are only a dollar or two. Quite cheap. You will save a life! By the way, I raised rats, starting with 2 and ending up with 52. They are the sweetest pets you can imagine. They don't bite, love and kiss and cuddle. You will love yours, and it is an affordable gift.

I have 3 rats, they were feeder rats and I paid 5 bucks a piece for them. If you get one I would suggest getting a very young one so You can start working with it as a baby. I was just feeding mine popcorn a little bit ago. They are named rocky, freddie and cookie.
