No, my husband works on a seed crew. They plant grass year round. It's better to plant it this time of the year though. You aren't to late. I suggest putting down some fertilizer then seed then straw and water it. You should see grass within 10 days.

Actually, according to Jerry Baker's lawn book, you should plant grass seed in the late summer, when grasses are going to seed naturally. In the meantime, you can keep the weeds down by keeping the lawn cut short.

It's never to late. Just through down some good heat tolerable seed, I like kentucky blue grass myself, but first I use an iron rake and I rake the area really good to loosen up the soil, then I throw in the grass seed, then I rake it again to mix it into the soil, then I water it with a sprinkler for about 15 min., then I throw a bale of hay all over it to cover it up so it will hold moisture and cause the seeds to germinate, it also keeps the birds from getting at it. Water 15 min everyday for about 1week then rake off the hay, you should be good to go.

A lot depends on where you live. If you are in California, now would be good. You have the rain around to keep it watered but it's warm enough for it to grow. If you are just trying to cover the bare spots look for the lawn spot mix at your local hardware store. It is mixed w/fertilizers to promote quick growth.

Put the seed in and place some peat moss on top. As long as it is continually damp all day it will germinate. Continue to keep it watered constantly and you will not have any problems.
