This is a very difficult question to answer. Unfortunately, history doesn't tend to separate into neat sections. One answerer has suggested that it be tied to the fall of the Roman Empire in the West and East.

But if you had been alive in Europe in the fifth century, you probably wouldn't have noticed much difference in your life between 475 and 477. Likewise, for just about everybody in Europe, things really didn't change much at all between 1452 and 1454.

Much depends on what part of Europe you are looking at. For example, many people would say that Dante and Giotto share much more with other artists associated with the Renaissance, not the Medieval Period, even though they lived in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Having said all of that, if you take a survey course in Medieval History, it will likely cover somewhere in the neighbourhood of AD 500 to 1500.

Generally, historians regard the Middle Ages as from the fall of the Rome (usually 467 AD when Emperor Romanus Augustus wasn't replaced) until the Renaissance (around 1400).
