Besides being a violation of the policy of the storage facility, it is also a violation of the zoning law. The safety features built in to a residence are not the same as those required for a storage unit. It's not only illegal, but potentially dangerous. Surely you've asked yourself why there aren't more people doing it.

You can live in a storage unit and it is not illegal - for you. However, the owner would be liable for renting housing without plumbing. Since the owner wouldn't want to be arrested to give you a low rate....they'll never let you live there.

Single "street people" in Las Vegas were doing this until a couple of them burned to death over useing sterno to cook with. They now made laws against it, it did work at the time.

SELF Storage means you store the stuff yourself. Not you store yourself. :)

Actually, there may be something in the contract of the unit concerning that. You probably aren't the first person who has thought of it.

Its illegal and storage companies do not allow people to live in the units.

I thought about doing this too, but there's no shower, no mailing address, and often the owners have a clause in their contract somewhere that you sign which states you cannot permanently reside on the premises.

proabably illegal but I would guess people have already tried it -- if I tried it I would borrow my brother's motor home first (a 37 foot Winnebago) -- it has a nice bed -- a shower -- a kitchen -- a tv -- a generator and can carry a couple hundred gallons of water .. but then again it would be cheaper to camp out ...

Sure. If it's illegal in your area it depends on how incognito you can be. But if you're up for it, you could shower and poo at the YMCA or at a truck stop. You could use camping gear, too.
