He was one of the original seven astronauts and flew in all three of the first manned space programs. Schirra flew solo in the Mercury program, with a crewmember in the Gemini program and with two others in the Apollo program.

Do you remember Wally Schirra? And do you know how many of the original seven are left alive and who they are? Best answer will go to the first person who can name them.

Yep, grew up in the sixties... I remember Wally Schirra...

According to Wiki, here's the Mercury Seven:

M. Scott Carpenter (b. 1925) Mercury-Atlas 7
L. Gordon Cooper (1927–2004) Mercury-Atlas 9, Gemini 5
John H. Glenn Jr. (b. 1921) Mercury-Atlas 6, STS-95
Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom (1926–1967) Mercury-Redstone 4, Gemini 3, Apollo 1
Walter M. Schirra (1923–2007) Mercury-Atlas 8, Gemini 6A, Apollo 7
Alan B. Shepard (1923–1998) Mercury-Redstone 3, Apollo 14
Donald K. "Deke" Slayton (1924–1993) Apollo-Soyuz Test Project

Looks like only M. Scott Carpenter and John H. Glenn Jr. remain with us... true pioneers, every one!

I do remember Wally Shirra.
Only 2 of the 7 survive: John Glenn and Scott Carpenter.

BTW--the missions were:
1)Mecury Sigma 7--the 5th American in space (1962)(3rd in orbit) 1965
2)Gemini 6 (first orbital rendezvous with Gemini 7)
3)Apollo 7--first test flight of the Apollo spacecraft (1968)

Shirra was the only astronaut to fly in all three programs. Did you know his fater was a pilot in World Ware I--and his mother was a barnstormer?

We lost a great American today.
