There are many things that can be done to minimize rockslides during construction and afterward.

Slope netting and fencing can be used to provide stability until vegetation can be established. Doublethickness retaining walls, terraced rock catchment walls, and trenches are used to provide additional protection areas between the problem slopes and the roadway. Additionally, viaducts and trenches can be used to redirect water away from problem areas.

Redirecting rainwater to concrete-reinforced channels to preserve the slope is also another possibility. It depends upon the risks involved and the budget :)

Yes, not only can they be careful in what type of rock they are cutting into which will help prevent slides, measures such as basically sealing the rock can be taken, some times cement will be placed over the rock in question, also they can put link fence wire boxes filled with rock fragments to support rock. ***
