Have you ever worked with someone and have had trouble understanding how they were even hired in the first place?

They are known for making mistakes and become offended when these mistakes are noticed and brought to their attention.

I have a co-worker who is constantly screwing up deals and I have to always come to the rescue to clean up the messes made. Then, when it's all said and done, there is no gratitude for breaking my neck to prevent them from looking like a fool.

What's unfortunate is that this co-worker doesn't learn from their mistakes and continues to create more burden for those of us who are knowledgeable of their position with this firm.

I am tired of incompetence and would prefer to just allow this individual to go it alone. However, I hate to see a person get left behind.

What are your suggestions?

Let them fall. If you keep holding them up, they will never get it. Most importantly, your bosses will not get it either. I have worked with several people that management thought were "Brilliant" when in fact they could barely type a letter much less properly take care of multi-million dollar deals. In the end, they were the ones to fall flat on their faces and got the big ax.

That being said, there is the consideration for how much damage they will do when they finally fall. In one case I saw, the person in question cost the company millions because of his inability to do his job. The rest of us let him fall (he was actually our senior underwriter so we kind of had to). I transferred out of that department right before he left. His drastic losses set in motion the end of the department. About 1 year after he left (the claims kept rolling in) the company exited that line of business and laid off the entire department (20 people got 3 weeks notice).

Make sure you cover your own behind and document everything you can. Show where these people failed and you had to step in to save them. Take that to your supervisor and tell him/her to do something about it. If they don't, polish up your resume and hit the street; it is not worth the hassle and stress.
