The answer is control.
Money is power!
What they have and YOU don't takes power from you and puts it in their hands.
Their job is to get power, keep the power and expand the power they have.
They can best achieve that by convincing you it is your civic duty to give your money to them to help the "poor" in as many and varried ways as they can dream up.
Always remember; charity is good. Charity comes from the heart.
Giving through the IRS is not charity, it is extortion.

BTW, the feds pay for the Interstate system (I-75, or US-10), the federal marshals, air traffic, FBI, CIA, IRA, and much more.
States pay for state roads (M-39), counties pay for the county roads, the cities / townships for the smaller ones.
The real crime is that most of the money collected lines the pockets of politicians, pensions you and I will never get, generous health benefits, fabulous trips (Nancy pelosi going to syria isn't cheap). If the waste was cut out, we would only need about 40% of what is collected.

First answer hits on an important issue. My mom and dad built our family home with their two hands and worked to do so paying taxes along the way. But, for my mom to get any Government help she will have to sell the home and go for broke, even though her and dad paid for these Government Programs to help people. I tell my mom, they would have done better not working and living on welfare.
Wait until people pull their tax deferred Ira's out when they retire, it be 80% by then! Ha! I just pay my taxes as I go, then when I retire it has already been taxed. But, I am sure they figure a way to get something from me even then.
