He puts his ancle pads under his socks and his one pad broke so he needed to take his skates and everything off. It takes a long time to do that so he was not ready for the overtime.

There is no official explanation...but seems like Luongo may have had an equipment problem that was NOT correctable during the TV timeout, so in with the back-up.

Seems to be some sort of equipment problem. Luongo looked like he had to take off his gear and put it back on.
