You're concerned about his joining the Navy. This is normal and natural. He'll be physically and mentally challenged, get 3 squares a day (meaning 3 meals a day), a place to sleep when the day's over, and the most modern training in the rate (job) he has chosen. If he's not used to the cold, however, he will need to try to adapt somehow, as USNRTC Great Lakes, now the only known boot camp in the navy, can get really cold at times! Plus, you'll be able to keep in touch with him--he should have his address information to send to you within the first week or two tops. Be cool for him--he's taking a big step here in growing up. Good luck to him and you both!

Unless he ends up being assigned to the 5th Fleet (the US ships in and around the Persian Gulf), he will be out of harm's way. Even if he ends up in the 5th, it's highly unlikely he will be in any danger.
The navy is a sea force, not a land force. They are also aviators (the US Navy has MORE planes than the US Air Force), but he can't be a pilot unless he's an officer.

I can give you two awnsers one is the bullshit responses these guys gave you , or i can give you the realist response [which can arguably be pessimistic] Your beloved brothers unless hes in reserve or national guard[or similar programs] is screwed , the recruiters that often visit my high school exagerrate and make money off each referral or recruit similar to that of a car salesman . So there job is to get that man in uniform within months. They will Go at any cost to recruit him, even if that includes Lying, or the euphanized word ''exagerating'' . In fact many soldiers die or are wounded and cannot function correctly . Those Who do Survive are often plagued by the ever so common PTSD , which haunts them for the rest of there lives. But your brother probably is thinking about the free collage tuition , the medical insurance and other benefits. But they dont do you very well when you have a round of ammunition exiting your skull. he's going to serve and protect my country, your country, our country. you should be proud of him because he chose to do so....even though he picked the navy of all branches.
as a military brat turned military spouse, the military is a stable way of life even though the downsides are deployment and extended tdy's. but everyone has to do it. but just think-he's guaranteed place to live, financial stablility [even though the government snubs and gives the good money to actors and singers], and people around him who know what he's going through.
you shouldn't be worried at all. you should be supportive. he's going to do fine.

The navy isn't that bad. If he is on a ship and is sent out to the sandbox don't worry as my hubby put it. "its like throwing rocks across the street and they can't throw one back"

I heard that the Navy keeps many guys in very tight quarters together for many months at a time and when its time to return home, they would rather stay very tight to the man in his quarters.......... Just a thought
