The phrase "mad as a hatter" came from the hat making process. The haberdashers (also known as hatters) used mercury to help compact the felt in the hat. They also handled the treated felt with their bare hands and so got mercury poisoning. This affected their minds and made them mad as hatters.
The stereotypical gold prospectors with their equipment and mule and paranoia were also portrayed as being crazed and it was for the very same reason! They used mercury to gather up the gold dust they had separated from all the other materials and would drain the mercury (with the dust attached) into the center of a raw potato. They'd throw the potato on the fire and when it was baked through, they could just squeeze the mercury out of the center and leave the gold behind as a nugget of sorts. They got mercury poisoning when they squeezed the potato.

Guess who was motivated by cartoons to play piano? When Lang Lang was two years old he saw Tom from Tom and Jerry playing Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Lang Lang said that this was the first time he heard Western Music. “From that moment on, there was only one thing I wanted, to play the piano,” Lang Lang explained.
Lang Lang was born on June 14, 1982 in Shenyang, China. Lang Lang started piano lessons when he was 3 years old (1985) with Professor Zhu Ya-Fen. When he was 5 years old, he won the Shenyang Piano Competition. You might think now, “Lang Lang has innate musical skills” but he practiced piano 10 hours a day! He is very diligent; he continuously played piano on his free time. When he was 9 (1991) years old, he enrolled in Beijing’s Central Music Conservatory. At that time, Professor Zhao Ping- Guo was his music teacher. In Germany, he received first place for outstanding artistic performance in the Fourth International Young Pianists Competition at the age of 11 (1993). Lang Lang played Op. 10 and Op. 25 Chopin Etudes at the Beijing Concert Hall when he was 13 (1995). In the same year, he also played Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and won first place at the Tchaikovsky International Young Musician’s Competition in Japan which was broadcasted by NHK television. Lang Lang was a featured soloist at the China National Symphony National Symphony’s opening concert and it was broadcasted by CCTV. He had a lot of triumphs in his music career and eclipsed many pianists.
In 1999, Lang Lang replaced Andre Watts at the last minute at the Ravina Festival’s “Gala of the Century” and played Piano Concerto No.1 by Tchaikovsky with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The Chicago Tribune called him the greatest, most exciting keyboard talent encountered in many years. London’s The Time’s critic wrote “Lang Lang took a sold-out Royal Albert Hall by storm……….This could well be history in making.” Berliner wrote, “Lang Lang is a superb musical performer whose artistic touch is always in the service of music.” Lang Lang also performed for a lot of presidents. Lang Lang played the piano for President George W. Bush, Laura Bush, and their guests at the White House. He performed in Shanghai for the president of China, President Hu Jin-Tao, president of Russia, President Vladimir Putin, and president of India, President Abdul Kalam. On January 2006, Lang Lang was the first pianist to do a solo in the Great Hall of People with an audience of about 8000 people. Lang Lang is not only a great piano player but he makes everyone excited by making extra movements to show more feeling in the music. It is incredible how many extra motions he can make when he performs. Sometimes it looks like he is having a brawl with the piano when he plays dramatic music. Many people like to watch him perform because the movements that he makes are just like funny antics. Lang Lang constantly thinks about his music. Even when he saw an octopus, he said, "I think this animal can play really good piano." Barenboim says that when Lang Lang plays the piano, it is like he is a cat with 11 fingers.
Lang Lang is among the best piano players in the world and is one of the youngest ones. From hectic songs to tranquil songs, he still captivates his audience with his eloquent piano skills. Even the people who don’t play piano appreciate him.
Hehe I did a report on him and I like music so um.. there.
