Akenhaton inherited the power of an Emperor, he messed his power up by trying to create a new religious order a monotheistic one, but the people didn't embrace it and soon as they got rid of him they destroyed the new religion and as much evidence about it and about Akenhaton himself. He was an embarrassment to the Egyptians at the time.

He invented the concept of the one all powerful god as opposed to the many gods previously worshipped by the Egyptians.
This made him very unpopular with the priests of the old religions as their income from worshippers disappeared.
Upon his death they reinstated all the old gods and eliminated all traces of his rule including the city he had built as the centre of his god cult.
The idea of the single all powerful sky god was subsequently adopted by the Jews to replace their old gods and eventually by the Christians and Moslems.
