A friend mentioned something about whales and gills, to which I said "No, they're mammals." He said that they use them to filter the water for debris and food. I said that whales with baleen use that to get plankton and other whales don't need to filter as they eat large prey. He still insists that whales have some kind of "gills". Can I tell him he's lost it?

Whales breathe with lungs, and some whales filter sea water with baleen, made out of highly specialized teeth. This is completely different from gills, which fish use to exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide just like lungs.

Baleen whales filter krill. This is unrelated to gills.

I've been known to sport the "whale tail" (new term to me) - but it was totally unintentional. No, I dont think the world wants to see my thong. I certainly dont like seeing mens boxers hanging out of their pants. I guess either designers need to make the "low rise" pants not so low or Victoria Secret needs to come up with some seriously low rise thongs.

You're right, whales, dolphins, turtles and perhaps some others have lungs just like we do and will drown if held under water.

Sure, go ahead and tell him. I suspect he is thinking of baleen, I don't know why he didn't believe you when you explained it, but if he didn't believe that, he won't believe you when you tell him he's lost it. :-)
