I have a buffalo wireless router ( G54S ) basically this is my connection.. phone line into my modem, ethernet cable into my router from my modem and then i should have wireless or i can plug another ethernet cable into my router and the other end into my computer so i dont have to use wireless but the rest of my family can. I know this is a cheap router but it has always done its job and now i just cant get it to work.. all of the lights are on and everything and I have never had to install or set up anything just pluged it in and it always worked, but now when i plug an ethernet cable into my modem and the other end into my router my ethernet light on my modem goes out, but if i get a nother ethernet cable and plug it into my router and then into my computer the ethernet light comes back on.. and one time i got this message.. network did not assign network address to the computer.. my modem works jsut fine tho as im on it right now .. do i just need a new router or what!

i would try pinging my router to see if there is a connection between your pc and the router first
first find out your routers IP address which you can by typing cmd in the run box after that goes throught you should be in COMMAND PROMPT type IPCONFIG /ALL you should see some thing that says DEFAULT GATEWAY thats you routers IP ADDRESS it will probley look something like this 192.168.1.1 or something like that after you got that type in command prompt

PING 192.168.1.1

but make sure you replace 192.168.1.1 with your deafult gateway
if that goes through and you get a reply
then you know theres a connection and it could be a driver issue or some thing simple :))

First did you power off the router leave it off for a full minute (I use two for best results) then plug it back in and wait for it to boot. (This router uses a full linux OS and takes some time to boot)

Second recheck the modem to router cable.Did you get hold of a cross over cable by accident? I have seen this with routers on occassion particularly if the cable is not a direct eithernet cable.

Third When you connect your modem are you connecting to the WAN / Internet port with it? If you try one of the other ports it will not work properly - like not assigning addresses.

Fourth It is possible the firmware in your router has become corrupted. The good news is that buffalo allows you to reload that so try going to the buffalo site, download the newest firmware for your router and load it to the router. (there is a page within the management to allow this).

The G54s is one of the BETTER routers available it certainly is better than most!
Hope that helps.

Oh I forgot here is the buffalo link
