Try a different brand of algae tablet. Some brands are more fragrant than others. Even try the cheap brands. The lure of food may bring him out.

You can try removing caves & rockwork so he has to come out in the open.

My rubber lips were all out & about for a long time (even with africans), but then my green terror moved in & I never see my rubber lips anymore. They're afraid of the big fish so they only come out at night now. They spend their whole day underneath a terra-cotta dish.

They're one of my favorite plecos.

Good luck.

Plecos are mostly nocturnal, so if you've provided him with a nice place to hang out during the day, he's going to use it. He's probably moving around more at night when you don't see him.

If the rock is keeping him too hidden, try switching it with a curved piece of driftwood. He'll still try to get under it, but depending on it's size and how much it curves, it may be easier to see him. Some plecos also like a bit of wood to scrape every now and then as well.

That's not unusual, they are after all nocturnal fish. If he is still alive you can count on the fact that he's coming out at night and eating. It may sound strange at first, but try adding a few more hiding places for him. If he has several places nearby that he can feel safe, he may stay out in the open more. Also try reducing the lighting in the tank, that might get him to come out.

get some algae tablets which are very appealing, and get rid of that rock. Put him in an area where there isn't alot going on. He may be nervous in a busy area, or with kids (or concerned grown-ups) peering in at him constantly. Don't take away all his hiding places though, or he may become stressed out. Just move them around a bit whenever you change the water, so it's all at once.

Plecos are nocturnal, so he'll come out at night. If you want to see him in action, secretly sneak out at around midnight and turn on the light to see him.
