At least as feudal systems go, the samurai were the Japanese counterpart to the medieval knight. Just as a knight they had a lord they served, and just as a knight they enjoyed a life of privilege beyond that experienced by most of the Japanese people. They had a code of conduct (bushido), though I don't think a medieval knight was as emphatic about dying gloriously in battle as the samurai were.

The Samurai

Basically a specialized military class given privileges in payment for their skills. Also with the same downfall, the introduction of gunpowder which made sword skills an unneeded expense vs. cheap musket men.
