It should be optional. Some PxP guys are great (I like Hughson from CBC, and Emrick, and some others are tolerable). Some are terrible, and some are just so-so, but it takes away from the atmosphere having to listen to them.
I would love to turn the announcers off when the home team scores a goal. As it is I usually just turn the volume way up and listen to the home crowd go nuts and the goal horm going off. It's one of the greatest sounds in sports.
When I used to play NHL 2004, I used to turn the announcers off. It was GREAT. Video game announcing is always horrible (not that there is any way around that).

It would work best if it was optional. Sometimes you just can't give the game that much attention.
I find that it depends a lot on the comentators. Most people like there home town guys (Dean and Gord rock!) but if your listening to a homer talk continually talk about how great their team is (Atlanta an TB come to mind) you just want to hit mute.
I will add one more thing...
Bob Cole has had a great career but he is done!
He cannot or will not remember players names!
Like an aging star player the longer he holds on the more damage is done to his reputation!
His calls are often a work of absolute fiction!
In game 5 of Ott - Pitt as the crowd was cheering at the game he actually started talking about the weather!
It is time to get some new blood in the CBC!

That's a great idea, as the commentary is horrible this year. American broadcasts notoriously say something stupid a couple of times a game. AND the CBC commentary are dreaming! Dreaming that the Canucks are the Maple Laffs. Between the calling Markis Mats and Sednin Sundin the manage to thrash several other names. Bieksa. It's bee - eksa. What a new LOW! They use to pride themselves at this stuff.
My TV has Alternate Stereo Settings. The main one does just that, highlights the arena sounds and fans, and low-lights the commentary.

Great idea; as long as there's crowd noise, whistles, etc., I'd like to see it. Even better would be an option to have either teams announcers. Even if it was a VS. game, maybe your team's radio feed. That way you could hear it the way you would most like, Arena Sound or your announcers, even switching back & forth. I agree with Clay, as a Rangers fan, we're usually lucky. Sam Rosen is a GREAT announcer & Joe Michelletti is growing on me (he's no J.D. though) Better than Mike Emerick or any of the other clowns we get on national television lately.

Remember a few years back when the CBC went on strike, and they showed the games without any announcers? You got a better feel for the game. Although I would rather turn off the tv play by play, and turn on Peter Maher for Flames game (rather have a hall of fame commentator then the CBC idiots!!)

I enjoy listening to the Pens commentary for the same reason I like John Madden:
"Look at those long arms of Staal. Really long arms. I mean his arms are long. He's like a Pterodactyl!"
"Thats right Steigy."
That never gets old.
I'd mute the VS and Olympic announcers in a heartbeat, though.

We have great local play-by-play here for the Sharks so I do like that. I watch games from all over the league all season long and I feel very fortunate we have the local coverage we do (it's Randy Hahn on FSN Bay Area, btw). Some PxP around the league is abysmal, though, (I recall Nashville's FSN coverage being particularly horrible) and I sort of cringe through it.

I like the Play-by-Play. Sure, some commentators are complete idiots, but I still like listening to what they have to say. Luckily, as a Rangers fan, the MSG commentators are outstanding, so I only have to worry about the idiots when the games are on Versus.

Good question, personally I think I would rather hear the announcers because occasionally they make some valid points. Also they can get me wound up and it gives me someone to argue with when I am watching the games alone.(My wife is not really into most games)

whats your funds? in case you pick an extremely extreme end gaming computing device identification propose spending around $1500 in case you intend on using it for gaming. in case you make investments $1500 in a stable computing device you will desire to confirm around 3 years of interest help in the past you should purchase a clean computing device or improve that one. Definetly get an intel center 2 duo, I even have an athlon x2 that's advantageous besides the undeniable fact that it doesnt help ddr2 RAM, nicely the recent athlon x2's do yet mobo's that help x2's and DDR2 RAM are particularly scarce
