My 7 year old's school is very strict. They have outside morning announcements every morning but if the child is not in line when the bell rings it counts as a tardy. I have had her barely getting to school when the bell rings many times but did not think it was a big deal since she was there on time and wasn't late to class. Due to this they sent someone to my home several times to verify my address and I never answered. They wanted to throw her out of school unless I could prove my address so I gave them recent copies of my utility bills and driver's license. She was allowed to stay in school but they told me they already set a court date for me. This is crazy cause it's not like she's getting to class late, just not in her line on time. Is there any way I can get out of this besides a lawyer? All they are going to do in court is make me sign something saying she can't be late again.

She gets to school on time but is not in line on time. They stand in line for 5-10 min. every morning for assembly. I am late cause I have to get my step-daughter to school in a different city and it depends on how traffic goes.

sounds goofy. what is the actual time thay say school starts? if they are in line outside at that time then it would be considered tardy. if not, then they can't do anything as she would not be late for school. you said "they" set a court date. who did? the courts or the school? only the courts can do that and it should have been sent to you in the mail.

Truancy

It is normal to have to prove residency.. around here, you can't even register your child without 2 proofs of residency

The issue you are having is the tardiness.... the "class start time" that you are refering to is the "Tardy Bell" -- the Morning announcements start only after the school's start time

She is getting to class late
My son's friend's mom went to jail because they were constantly late by just a few minutes

In here case, they set the court date & she had to agree to have the child to school every single day on time (the judge recommended 30-15 minutes early in case of a traffic problem)

The first time that the child was between the first bell & the tardy bell, they let it slide

The first time she was sitting down in her chair just as the tardy bell rang... so then the judge ruled that this particular classroom door be closed after the first bell.. so the child would then have to open the door thus verifying that she was late & so the teacher could determine if it was before or after the tardy bell... and they involved DHR.. they made the mom pay for couseling & parenting classes

The third time, she went to jail for 1 week

The time after that, her child got taken away from her

GET YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL ON TIME

If you were 5 minutes late for work every day - would they fire you?

Do you think maybe this is embarassing to your child that you aren't dropping her off ON TIME?

Have you considered the impact that your lackizadical attitude toward school personnel that you have will reflect in the long-run on your child??

She is late to class.... You don't define or determine what is late... I can assure you that if anouncements have started then it is PAST START TIME

Even a lawyer isn't really going to be able to "get you out of this" --- perhaps minimize the initial impact & you will get a court appointed attorney -- most likely your child will also get a court-appinted Guardian attorney as well

And that Guardian attorney is to PROTECT YOUR CHILD -- and that includes protecing the child from an irresponsible parent as well

If she is required to be there at a certain she needs to be there at a certain time. It doesn't matter what you think is acceptable. Most jurisdictions look at is as parental neglect if your kids are habitually late or absent to school. Go in front of the judge, explain your circumstances and agree she will never be late again. Be prepared for consequences if you cannot live up to that agreement.

Why do you think its ok for her to miss the announcements when everyone else is required to be there?

Edit - So they stand in line 5-10 minutes? If they are required to be there then they are REQUIRED to be there. You need to make other arrangements if you cannot get her there on time.

Yes. It is because we have compulsory education. 3 unexcused tardies will start the process. If you have a court date, I'll bet anything you have at least 10 tardies and a whole bunch of absences. That's not really fair to your daughter. Think how stressful it is for her to go in late. Also, because she is stressed over it, the stress will keep her from learning until she calms down. Set your clock earlier and get out of bed. Good Grief lady.

I don't know the laws in your state, but in the state of Indiana, it is a crime to not have your child to school on a regular basis and on time.

There are a certain number of times they can be absent or late, and then it starts getting sticky....

You are being an irresponsible parent by not having the child there on time.

ON TIME is not what YOU consider on time, it's what they consider on time.

You are also being irresponsible by not answering the door when they come.... geesh, what is your problem???

For God's sake, get up out of bed 10 mintes earlier and start being a good parent.

Your poor daughter... I feel sorry for her... imagine what you are putting HER through every morning.

If they are taking you to court, do NOT go without a good lawyer. Do NOT sign anything without an attorney reviewing it. This school sounds a little over the top. They will be represented by an attorney, you should be too.

You're taking this too lightly. There must be a lot of tardiness if they're taking you to court. Also, they're not going to just make you sign something.

You're in for a big surprise.

YOU HAVE NOT CASE

that is the schools rules and you need to obey them. If you can not then don't have your child go to that school. It is part of the way the school works.

An example of what you are saying is sending you child to a Church's private school and and then complaining that they teach religion and pray.

You have two options follow their rule or go to another school

I'd say just go and sign the thing, it won't hurt you.

And then just get to school early, just pretend that you have to be there 5 minutes early.

Why?
Just to show your daughter that school is very important. Thats it.
