My classroom has a new class pet, 2 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. A classmate said that they will eat shrimp and snails that are in the tank. Will they? Also, I tried to tell them that snails and shrimp are warm water, but they won't listen.

They may well eat the shrimp, especially if they get hungry. The snails are probably safe, the shells are generally too hard for goldfish.

A goldfish would technically be an omnivore, because they need to have some plant matter in their diets.

They would eat brine shrimp, maybe snails, but should have a good flake or pelleted food made for goldfish as a staple. You can give them treats of cooked peas with the skins removed, romaine lettuce, spinach, cucumber, squash, shredded carrot, melon, etc. as treats. Its best to briefly cook or freeze these to soften the cell wall to make these more digestible. See this link about some other foods for the goldfish, including a recipe for home made gel-based food: http://thegab.org/Articles/GoldfishNutrition2.html

Uh hm - goldfish eat anything that fits in their mouth. A large snail would probably be okay - just nothing small enough to fit in their mouth. However the ammonia might be to much for the poor snail.

they are not carnivals or herbivores because they eat meat and the eat those flakes so that would make the omnivores kinda like us eating a stake and salad it is actually good for them to feed them things like bloodworms but as far as killing other fish most all fish will kill smaller fish and eat them and shrimp snail or what ever

Snails and shrimp are warm water. Goldfish are not carnivores. Occasionaly if you don't feed them they may eat one another only if their dead.

No, goldfish are omnivores, which mean they eat meat and veggies. Carnivores eat only meat and vegetarians only vegetables. If you look at goldfish food it contains meat and veggies, depending on what you get.

yes they are carnivore... really the only fish that are vegetarians are Red-belly Pacus (freashwater) And some grazers (saltwater) They will ate other fish. They do pick @ each other, especially if the tank is too small.

Yes they are omnivores. Not only that but they are cannibals too, when one of their own dies in a tank they'll eat it.
