I'm wondering if anyone has had any success at growing potato's in a hot climate, such as Queensland Australia. Can it be done? And does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about it?

Yes, I have grown potatoes in Mississippi. Because of the hot climate potatoes must be planted in early spring or late winter. Best time in MS is usually late Feb. Here we purchase "seed potatoes" from a farm supply store or other supplier of plants, seed etc. These potatoes have been treated with chemicals to retard disease etc. Regular potatoes from the grocery store, while not best-variety not known, will work. Cut in half, a major "eye" (bud) pointing up and plant in well prepared soil about 3" deep. Watch for potatoe bugs which will eat the plant very badly.

There is a really great way to help potato plants beat the heat. And you get to recycle, too! Put a tire on the ground, fill it up with topsoil, plant your taters. Wait until they get about a foot tall, then put another tire on top of the first one, fill it up with topsoil (yes, on top of the others) then plant more. Wait until they are also about a foot tall and repeat this process. Go as tall as you like. You just have to make sure you water the heck out of this pile, and make DARN sure you have good drainage at the bottom to avoid rot. Then, when it's time to harvest, you can use one layer at a time. Good luck.

I have tried it twice in Texas..a similar climate. No luck. They get started but always seem to die. Keep looking though. My grandfather in Missippi grew them so there is a way.
