There's several good books to read on this subject.

Fredrick Jackson Turner's "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" written after 1890, when the frontier officially "closed".

And for an analysis of FJT's themes in the political history of the US up to the New Deal, see David M. Wrobel's "The End of American Exceptionalism: Frontier Anxiety from the Old West to the New Deal".

There's no doubt. Frontier values are one major reason the NRA (National Rifle Association) are so persistent and have so much power. Handguns will never be eradicated from society unless our "frontier values" are tempered. Many would also argue that part of the reason we are involved in Iraq has to do with Pres. Bush's Texa "frontier" values.

heh... just check out our current president's behavior..he certainly seems to have some pretty unrealistic frontier delusions.
