Say a capricious genie made you immortal against your will in every way but one: you could still commit suicide. How long would you choose to live before ending your life? (Assume you will be in good health all the time you're immortal, and not growing older.)

If you're the type of person who WOULD choose immortality, great, I'm all with you. I'm interested in hearing from those who do NOT want to live forever, their reasons why and how long they feel is long enough to live.

Well.. so far I think I am beginning to meet people that remind me of people I already know..and don't particularly like..seeing events that have outlived their usefulness to the species as a whole and over all dont expect anything new coming down the pike from the evidence already established by history as we more or less know it.
So..if I meet a capricious genie in the road I would probably have to kill it before it magicked me into immortality.

Many people think immortality is the greatest gift imaginable. However, it is not because God is being a miser, being stingy, that he never extended such an offer for human beings.
True, a few Born Again shall receive immortality by becoming heavenly spirit beings for the sake of being Kings and Priests with Christ.
But it is eternal life and a modified definition of mortality that is God's greatest possible gift to humans.

I would not want to be immortal. If I had my way, I'd live until the day I was no longer mentally sound, or the day my body was in such a deteriorated state that I was in pain all the time or couldn't take care of myself.. Because if I'm not "with it", how would it be possible to enjoy life, anyway?

I would only want to live as long as I was meant to, as well as live my life to the fullest until that moment happens. An immortal life would be too exhausting, to be honest with you. Although, seeking knowledge is one of my hobbies so I guess there would still be that limit that one could achieve in terms of experiences and perception. Overall I believe that life is all about how you percieve it, not what happens to you. or a bit of both.

I would live until I felt fulfilled and that there was nothing left of valor for me to do. There is of course the possibility of accumulated tragedies or feelings associated with such a long life that would cause me to end it sooner. Their is also the possibility that with so much time came so much wisdom and understanding that you would feel a higher power is involved and that it is your duty to continue on for much longer than you would think, or perhaps such self control and bliss that you would not wish to end your life at all.

Wouldn't it be sad to live so long? How many funerals must you attend - your family, your friends? Everyone, until all are gone, no one left but you. Then, it would start all over again. Your new friends would die, as would your great-great grandchildren. And still you continue. Funeral after funeral. Day after day and long, lonely day. Suicide is not an option. I'll tell you when I'm dead :-p (my wish = what I have lived x what I miss doing x how many years others should have lived +1 / all the things I shouldn't have been doing)

For me living is a task, but not all of us know our task. As of me my task is to learn why i'm here and when i knew that i will pass it to my next generation and see to it if they really learn it, then it is my time to die....
This is what makes my life beautiful to see my goal at the end...
and end my life with its accomplishment.

When one's purpose/dream is completed.
It takes the whole human species to achieve "immortality" by ensuring we don't go extinct by killing ourselves off!
World peace!
