It is mandated by a law, that came about, after a 1937 explosion, in Rusk county,Texas, that resulted in the deaths of 300 children, and teachers. Texas was the first state to enact this law, followed quickly by the rest of the states. The federal government made it law, so any manufacturer, will not produce any combustible gas, without the "smell", for liability reasons. People are so "sue happy", that if some one made the gas without odor, they would quickly be out of business.

Why would you not want your propane to have a smell?

That smell is added for a reason. Your safety. In it's natural state, propane has no odor. As a safety precaution, an odourant called Ethyl Mercaptan is added so any presence of propane may be easily detected. And while most of us are able to detect even the slightest propane odor, some people are unable to.

That smell could save your life and it's there to warn you of a leak. Unfortunately, the odor can sometimes fade and many survivors of propane explosions stated they never smelled gas. Imagine how many lives could have been saved if they could have been forewarned by "that smelly stuff"?

They add the smelly stuff so you can detect if their is a leak. It stinks but it is definetly a potential life saver. You definetly wouldnt want a leak and then an explosion because you didnt smell it. The smell is worth dealing with instead of losing a life or being severly burnt.

I believe that it is required to put skunk gas in the propane. That way you can tell if you have a leak and get out of the house. If you couldn't smell the gas, then you could put yourself in danger if you have a leak and you can't tell it. good luck

That smell is a specially produced product to let you know when there is a leak. It is put in at the refinery it is made at. No way to get around it.

It comes that way to make leaks detectable. Selling it without the smell would be illegal as well as stupid.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to sell it without that smell. Who are you trying to blow up anyways?

Scary. That sulfur smell is pretty important. I guess you could get it from an industrial supplier. Please, stay away from me!
