Food poisoning, probably the #1 excuse to call off. But I mean - they can't say anything, can they?! Tell them you ate at Taco Bell for lunch.

Well, once I had a real attitude problem, so I had a neighbor who had a strong stomach cut off 3 of my fingers. Then I called work from the emergency room. Sadly, we had left my trigger finger on and I had to go to work anyway. Bad idea...
I had to get the other fingers reattached just to "balance out" my hand.

Your cousin went into labor and you have to go to the hospital.
Your uncle caught the flu and you need to go see him.
Do you have a pet? If you do, say it got ran over by a car, or he needs to go to the vet.
You need to babysit for your sisters friends kids.
Your best friends wedding is tonight.

Tell them that you have multiple personality disorder and one of your personalities is holding the rest of you hostage and that the personality that goes to that particular job is one of the hostages so your other personality, (the one that is calling) will not allow you (your work personality) to come in today.
Just the sheer explanation alone should be proof enough that you really are insane.

Nail in your foot, or you were doing the dishes, you dropped a glass on the floor, thought you cleaned up all the pieces, but you got a cut, and needed 2 stitches.

just say you had a family emergency and that's it ,do not go into any details the more you say the more they ask questions.
If they ask what happened just tell them that's its kind of personal and you rather not say.
By law they can not force you to tell them.
