R690, Brian, is my choice. The bigger the cage, the better, and I like the idea of having a full middle floor to add extra square footage to the size of the cage. More flat surface for huts and toys. I am a big fan of as much floor space as possible in a cage. Rats love to climb, but they can't hang onto those bars forever. They need a place to rest.
These cages might look heavy, but they are surprisingly light, easy to move around, and easy to clean.
The bar spacing is aready correct for rats, young and old, so it's pretty much one cage for life.

I like the 690 better because it is larger so your rats can climb more and you can add another some day if you get the urge. The 690 can house 4 rats if they get 2 ft each. The 680 can house 3 rats.

I had the 690 for many years and absolutely LOVE it. It's not hard to clean at all. I put stick-on linoleum tiles (cut to fit) on the floors which made it more comfortable for the rats, prettier and easier to clean. It is an EXCELLENT cage for up to 4 rats and one of the best you can buy.
I know of others who feel the same way about the 680, but I like having the HEIGHT, since rats like to climb.
I recently retired my 690 and bought the bigger 695. I LOVE it and so do my girls!

you somewhat do no longer want a extensive cage for 2 rat I even have had rats for over 22 years in a medium sized chicken cage without issues many people say that the cage I saved my rats in became into to small yet I in no way had any issues. in basic terms upload some levels and take the rats out for atleast 30 minuets an afternoon

R-690, of course, looks much more fun for the rat but it would require more work to clean. Both cages have their own advantages.

I always go for the bigger one...how many rats are going to reside in this dwelling?
The bigger the cage, the more opportunity you have for enrichment. (We use flour and water and strips of newspaper over inflated ballons to make paper mache toys for our animals. once you have a couple of layers of news paper, and it's all dry, pop the ballon and remove it, then fill the empty space inside with fun treats! They love it, and they are fun to make! You can make different sizes by filling the ballon with more or less air)
Rats also love to climb...and with a two level cage, there is a lot more area for them to climb over. I would definately go for the r-690. There is just so much more opportunity to do interesting things for your rats (and a much more interesting space for your rats to live in!).

the r-690 looks beeter to me bc they do get bigger and you dont have to worry about getting a bigger cage when they do. the r-680 is small any they do not have a lot of room to move around.the bigger the better...
