That would be so cool to have grass on my balcony.

yes you could, but it might be illegal.
Do you own your home first off? if you do, then it should be fine. If you rent, lease, or live in an apartment complex, then I'd check with your landlord, or super first. In a lease contract, if you do that and it damages the balcony, they can kick you out, and or sue you. So find out the rules first.

Grass can actually grown in nothing but its own trimmings, a thin layer only an inch thick. I know this because we left some clippings in the back of the trailer, and a few seeds spills, before we knew it, we had grass patches all over on it!

What is your balcony made of? you might want to put down a metal covering so you don't rot out the balcony, and so roots don't grow into it.

But that would be a wonderful site, good luck with it, and have at least 2 inches of soil for your grass to grow into, it will be decently healthy.

grass roots generally go as far into the ground as the height above ground. When it is mowed, the roots shuck and go back to a smaller depth. That is why you want to keep grass a little longer in the summer, it protects the ground from getting too hot and the roots are deeper to get more nutrients. You should be able to grow it on a balcony. Are you talking about seeding it across the balcony floor??? You rock! Natural shag carpet.

haha i bet you could pull it off if you put some thought to it.

and just use some garden shears to cut it small area should only take a few minutes every other week

and if you got pets it would make it a little easier if you live in a high rise apartment, not as many walks just open door let the dog do the business in the yard er i mean balcony

Grass roots are pretty shallow. I don't see why you couldn't grow it on a balcony.

Hmm...you probably could, the roots are very short. Once I saw a car in the demolotion derby that was covered in grass. It was really cool!

Grass roots are about 2" deep, don't forget, how are you going to cut it? where is the dirt (around the edges)going to go when it rains? Good luck.

Get a planter box and plant the seeds there. It will work with little effort

That should work. But make sure you have adequate drainage and control run off.
