Maybe, have gotten Mr. Hui some mental help. They knew he was not a normal person. He show signs of mental illness in writing class, a year before V.T. happened.

The killer should have been committed to hospital before this happened; but that is extremely difficult under the current law, and I don't know whether it could have been done.
The law at the time also allowed him to buy guns. That law has been changed now; but I don't know whether gun sellers have access to the names of people with serious mental illness.
And it is conceivable that he could have obtained guns illegally anyway.
The only other thing I can think of would be, if some people (students or teachers) had been armed.
These massacres don't happen in high-crime neighborhoods, you may notice. The killer knows that some people carry guns, legally or illegally; and they don't know who is armed.
I did notice that one classroom was spared because the students barricaded the door with a table and held it in place. The killer shot blindly through the door, but nobody was standing there. Then he moved on to the next room.

A lot of those people were licensed to carry concealed firearms; it is legal by state law. The college, by usurping on that law and disallowing firearms on campus guaranteed that nobody would be packing. If just one person, duly licensed and trained to use his weapon properly and responsibly had been carrying, then the number of dead would have been greatly diminished. If I had been there and under the above named circumstances happened to be carrying, I'd have shot that motherf'ucker dead so fast his mama's head would still be spinning.

If I had been a student I would like to think I would have acted quickly to throw books at him, rush him...something to distract him. Even if it meant my life, I might have saved many others. What has happened to the courage of our young people? My gosh, the gunman took his OWN life. Thank goodness for the courage of a few that did save lives. It's just a shame so many had to die.

Carried a gun. Could have potentially stopped him before so many were killed. The laws only keep the 'good' people from harming someone. It is just a deterant.
