I have seen in 30+ years of watching politics that it seems to boil down to this:
Since we are all perceived to be a bad choice, then if I can convince the voting public that I am not as bad as you, then just maybe I will win the next ---------election, poll or just more favor with the populace.
.....and by the way Hillary Clinton is a Democrat and won the election in a state where she was a resident of less than one year.

It's all an elaborate show.
Revelations 13:16-18
16. He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,
17. so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.
18. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

Because politicians on both sides feel the way to win is to knock down the other guy. They focus so little on what they stand for and instead focus on what the other guy does wrong or is not doing.

It's called dirty politics, and since they don't have anything to offer themselves they can only build themselves up by tearing down their peers. You see it in the debates they just try and outshout each other and they have no point. Why would anyone support them? It's an insult to the American people.

Same reason non politicians do. Many people think the only way they can build themselves up is by tearing others down. I think that is pathetic.
