If you live near your mom and she is alone on mother's day because her husband works far away, but you are married and have children, who do you devote your time to? One wants help cleaning out her basment all day, which the other does not want to spend her day doing.

why can't your wife go with you to your mother's to spend the day as a family.

That is what we do. I have everyone and their inlaws over to my house so that we can ALL spend the day TOGETHER.

What's the big deal with spending the day with BOTH of them together.

The basement can wait.

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

This is a really beautiful poem too!
Women have strengths that amaze us.
They carry children, they carry hardships, they carry burdens but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up for injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without new shoes so their children can have them.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about a birth or a new marriage. Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They have sorrow at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all sizes, in all colors and shapes.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world spin!
Women do more than just give birth.
They bring joy and hope.
They give compassion and ideals.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have a lot to say and a lot to give.

I would opt for the one whom doesn't want help cleaning out her basement all day.
If it's your mom and she wants help with the cleaning, invite her to spend time with your family, as she will be alone. Have her for dinner, and give her flowers or candy and hugs.
If it's your wife (I can't imagine a wife with children wanting to spend Mother's Day cleaning out the basement) suggest you take the family to visit your Mom for Mothers Day. Take some food, as your mom may not be prepared to feed your family. Spend the day with your family and loved ones, and arrange to get the basement cleaned another day. Which would ask you to spend an entire Sunday working on a holiday? It's a family day.

My mom lives 3 hours away, and unless she's in town visiting, I will spend Mother's Day with my wife. In my home this year, Mother's Day is an interesting one, because my birthday is the same day as Mother's Day.

Do both. Your mom is your mom. You cannot see or not talk to your mother on Mother's Day--I think you would get punished. Maybe sent to your room without dinner--Your wife should understand that your wife is your wife, not your mother. Take the kids to see your mom, do what she would like done. Then tell your wife, to use the day (whether it be Sat. or Sun) for a spa day, then the whole family out for a nice dinner, or cook her something special. If you cook at home, at least your kids can help and your wife would be happy.

Suggest an alternative... Mother's day should be fun for mom not work save the basement for another day... Have a picnic, visit the zoo, have dinner out... With both mom and wife...

Compromise. I don't think anyone who has a mother should neglect her on mother's day. Get the card, candy, and flowers for your mother. Take them early in the day, and spend the rest of your day devoted to what your wife wants to do for mother's day.

Your dedication should be to your mother on mothers day. The children should be with your wife (thats their mother).

Note: A lousy group of kids is the reflection of the dad on mother's day. Since he is the "chief" hold him accountable.

To grandmother's house we go!

Grandparents are the foundation of a family. All mothers should be recognized but if there is a choice, go to grandma's. Mother's Day is about family and the family atmosphere and work mothers put into their families. Who better to represent this than grandma?
